GENERAL OVERVIEW: Rostvertol has been producing helicopters designed by the Mil design bureau since 1956 and is a world leader in the manufacture of heavy-lift helicopters. It built the Mi-6 Hook and Mi-10 Harke heavy-lift helicopters and now builds the Mi-26 Halo. It also produced the Mi-25 and Mi-35 Hind combat attack helicopters and reportedly is ready to build the Mi-28 Havoc. GENERAL OVERVIEW: The Rybinsk Design Bureau of Motor Building is the current name of the aircraft engine design organization formerly known as the Kolesov Engine Design Bureau. Kolesov took over the organization from V.A. Dobrynin who founded it in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Under Kolesov's direction, the bureau designed turbojet engines for the Myasishchev M-50 Bounder experimental supersonic bomber, turbojets for the Tu-22 Blinder medium bomber, RD-36-35FVR lift engines for the Yak-38 Forger, RD-36-51A supersonic engines for the Tu-144 SST, RD-36-51V engines for the Myasishchev M-17 Mystic, and lift engines for the Yak-141 Freestyle. The Rybinsk design bureau is currently working on two core engines that can be adapted to a variety of applications. The D-277 is a large turbofan intended for use in the next generation of Russian civil transport aircraft currently in development, including the Tu-334-II, Yak-46, and An-180. The TVD-1500 is being developed as a turboshaft engine for the Ka-62 helicopter and as a turboprop for the An-38 medium transport and the Su-80 medium-range utility aircraft. The design bureau is collocated with the Rybinsk Motor-Building Plant, but the two organizations are involved in different projects.

The bureau is a partner in the RosAn Scientific Production Association (an association of the Antonov, Rybinsk, and Stupino design bureaus with the Novosibirsk Aviation and Tyumen Motor-Building Production Associations) to co-produce the An-38 short/medium range transport. GENERAL OVERVIEW: The Rybinsk Motor-Building Plant produces aircraft engines designed by the Perm Aviadvigatel Scientific Production Association. Three versions of the D-30 engine (D-30-KU, D-30-KP, D-30-KU-154) comprise the bulk of Rybinsk's production effort. The variants of the D-30 produced at Rybinsk power the Il-62 Classic, the Il-76 Candid and the Tu-154 Careless. The plant also produces the D-65 diesel engine as well as snowmobiles and milk separators.

The plant is also involved in Inversia Air, a Latvian freight transport company operating four Il-76 aircraft. The Rybinsk plant, the Mazeikiai Oil Processing Plant (in Lithuania), and the Latvian agricultural enterprise Lacplecis are equal shareholders in Inversia Air and provided start-up and development capital. The Rybinsk plant was also involved in the sale of Il-76 and Tu-154 aircraft to China in two separate deals brokered through Aviaeksport.
