GENERAL OVERVIEW: Arkadiy Dmitrievich Shvetsov founded an aircraft engine design bureau in Perm in 1934. Under his leadership, the Shvetsov OKB developed a series of radial aircraft engines that powered Lavochkin fighters, Tupolev bombers, Ilyushin transports and Mil and Yakovlev helicopters. Leadership of the OKB devolved upon Pavel Solovyev following the death of Shvetsov in 1953. As the Solovyev OKB, the bureau created a series of turbofan and turboshaft jet engines that power 26 types of aircraft ranging from Tupolev and Ilyushin transports to Mil helicopters and MIG interceptors. Solovyev's last design was the PS-90, a high bypass ratio turbofan currently used on the Il 96-300 and the Tu-204. In 1989 Solovyev's OKB became Perm Aviadvigatel, and it was subsequently privatized. Aviadvigatel is working on developing a series of engines from the PS-90 core, as well as contra-rotating propfans and industrial gas-turbine engines for power generation and gas pumping. Aviadvigatel-designed engines are produced at the collocated Perm Motorostroitel Production Association and also at the Rybinsk Motor-Building Plant.
