• Russian Federation Cautions Against Military Deployment In Outer Space; Reiterates Proposal For Conference To Prevent Militarization, UN Press Release, 17 October 2000 -- The exploration of space, while opening up new horizons to humankind, also created the threat of a militarized outer space, the representative of the Russian Federation said this afternoon as the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) continued its consideration of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.

• Grey Says Calls for Outer Space Treaty Talks Are "Unwise", USIS Washington File, 15 September 2000 -- The U.S. Representative to the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva says that the insistence by some CD members that negotiations on a new Outer Space Treaty begin immediately is both "unwise and unrealistic."
• Press Conference By Russian Federation President, UN Press Briefing, 08 September 2000 -- The Russian Federation had made proposals to make international relations more secure, just and democratic. It had proposed, for example, an international conference on the prevention of the militarization of outer space. The meeting would be held early next year and would coincide with the anniversary of the first flight of a man into space.

• GENERAL ASSEMBLY WOULD CALL FOR STEPS TO PREVENT OUTER SPACE ARMS RACE, IN ONE OF SIX RESOLUTIONS APPROVED BY DISARMAMENT COMMITTEE Press Release GA/DIS/3157 -- 1 November 1999 -- The General Assembly would call upon all States, in particular those with major space capabilities, to contribute actively to the prevention of an arms race in outer space and to refrain from actions contrary to that objective, according to one of six draft resolutions approved this morning by the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security).
• Prevention of An Arms Race in Outer Space Presentation by Mr. Wang Xiaoyu, at the WILPF Seminar - March 10, 1999 -- Some country insists that at present there is no arms race in outer space and therefore there is no need to discuss the issue of PAROS in any forum, including the Conference on Disarmament (CD). However, the fact is that the same country has over the years continued its efforts in developing space weapons with a view to deploying such advanced weapon systems in outer space in the near future.

Chinese Ambassador Li Change urged the United Nations' arms control body to launch global negotiations to stop outer space from being turned into a battlefield. A further key topic this session was the question of adherence to the five international space treaties.
