THIS GUIDE SUPERSEDES THE AGM-86B PORTION OF THE AGM-86 B/C AIR LAUNCHED CRUISE MISSILE (ALCM) SECURITY CLASSIFICATION GUIDE DATED 22 MARCH 94.

Description:
The AGM-86B Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) System is designed to complement existing weapons on the B-52H to deliver a nuclear warhead to a designated target in an air-to-ground role. The ALCM is powered by a turbofan jet engine at subsonic speeds. It is able to fly complicated routes to a target through use of a terrain contour-matching guidance system. During flight, this system compares surface characteristics with maps of the planned flight route stored in on-board computers to determine the missile's location. As the ALCM nears its target, comparisons become more specific, guiding the missile to the target. ALCM's launch options and range provide the strategic bomber force with increased mission flexibility. The enemy's defenses are hampered by the missile's small size and low-altitude flight capability, which makes them difficult to detect on radar. The bomber's exposure to enemy defenses is reduced due to its extended range of effectiveness. Therefore, the missile may be launched with a large uncertainty in position, will independently navigate to the target, and initiate warhead detonation with a small Circular Error Probability (CEP).
AUTHORITY: This guide is issued under authority of DOD 5200.1-R/AFI 31-401 and AFP 205-37.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES: The Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) Security
Classification Guide (SCG) AGM-86B dated 1/May/1997, is a complete revision
which replaces its part of ALCM AGM-86B/C SCG dated 22 March 1994. The AGM-86C SCG will be a separate stand alone guide.
