The shipyard is situated at the meeting point of major transport arteries serving the Russian far east. Originally founded with a mission to build surface vessels for the Pacific fleet, the yard has accumulated a wealth of experience in the construction and repair of boats and ships of various classes and types, including anti-submarine vessels, control vessels, landing hovercraft, missile boats, river artillery craft and minesweepers, research vessels, fishing vessels and passenger craft. Over 20 vessels have been supplied for export to India, Algeria, Cuba and other countries. The yard’s prospects center on work for the Russian Navy, Federal Border Service, State Customs Department, Ministry for Disasters and Emergencies, and the Department of Fisheries, together with export-orientated production for countries in the Asia-Pacific region and south-east Asia. Phase two of the yard’s development program came on line in 1988. Refurbishment work on a 2,000-ton slipway facility is in progress. The shipbuilding yards in Khabarovsk are operating at a very low percent of capacity, as most of the Russian fishing and sea cargo companies cannot afford new boats, and prefer to repair their vessels in the Republic of Korea and Northern China for lower price and better quality.
The new multipurpose Mercury cutter was developed by the Central Design Agency named after Alekseev. Tula Apparatus Design Agency will offer several versions of machine-gun and cannon, and missile armament for Mercury cutter. Serial production of the new cutter is performed at Khabarovsk and Yaroslavl shipbuilding plants.
The Russian state company Russian Technologies has signed a contract with the shipbuilding plant in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk on promoting the plant's production on the world market. The shipbuilding plant in Khabarovsk intends to export its motorboat with a special air hollow on the bottom. The boat is meant for patrolling the state and customs borders, fighting against smuggling, environmental control and other purposes. The boat is more than 30 meters long and more than 8 meters wide. It is of 100 tons displacement. It can be in an autonomous voyage for 5 days, the crew is 16 people. The boat may be used in moderate and subtropical conditions. The Khabarovskiy Kray is located in the central part of the Russian Far East. It borders the Primorskiy Kray and Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the south, the Amurskaya Oblast and Yakutiya in the west, the Magadanskaya Oblast and China in the north. On the east it is washed by the Okhotsk Sea and the Sea of Japan. The Khabarovskiy Kray comprises 17 counties (rayons), 7 towns, and 31 settlements. The region's major industries include machine building and metal working (manufacture of machines for agriculture and energy complex, ship building and ship repair, manufacture of foundry equipment), nonferrous metallurgy, wood, wood-processing and paper and pulp industries, oil refining, chemical and fish industries.
