North Korea has a brigade-sized SCUD B/C surface-to-surface missile (SSM) unit about 50 kilometers north of the DMZ. Chiha-ri is the main technical support base for North Korea's Scud missile brigade. According to US intelligence, North Korea is building at least two new launch facilities for the medium-range Taepo Dong 1 missile. As of late 1998 a launch facility for the Taepo Dong 1 was under construction at Chiha-ri, and a similar facility at Yongo-dong could be completed in 1999. Facillities include bunkers for propellant and a launch platform. Some construction may include bunkers for Taepo Dong storage, from which the missiles could be rolled out and elevated into launch position.
