Ministry of Atomic Power Industry
Nuclear weapons development in North Korea is being carried out as a priority project under the Atomic Research Institute under the control of the government, the General Department of Atomic Energy under the control of the
State Administration Council, and the Atomic Guidance Department, with Kim Chong-il in direct control of
them all.
The North Korean Ministry of Atomic Power Industry is in charge of nuclear power and weapons development.
The Ministry of Nuclear Industry was changed to General Department of Atomic Energy in May of 1994 and Pak Yong-nam (a close associate to Kim Chong-il) was named to head it. Hong Kun-pyo, deputy minister of the Ministry of Nuclear Industry, had been in charge of the nuclear development program from the beginning. Nuclear weapons development organizations include:
- Atomic Energy Research Institute and College of Physics in Yongbyon
- Atomic Energy Research Institute in Suchon
- Atomic Energy Department of Kim Il-song University
- Physics Department of Kanggye Defense College
- Metal Science Section of the Chemical Department of Pyongsong College of Science
- Physics Research Institute of Pyongsong College of Science
- nuclear power plant in Sinpo
- uranium mines in Kusong, North Pyongan Province
- uranium mines Sunchon, South Pyongan Province
- uranium mines unidentified places in North Hwanghae province
