Xuanhua [Hsuan-hua]
40°38'N 115°06'E
Xuanhua, in Heibei province northwest of Beijing, is one of at least three locations at which the DF-5 ICBM was deployed as of early 1998. Presiously, this facility hosted the DF-3 IRBM, but these have been withdrawn. As with other Second Artillery Corps units in the Beijing Military Region, the identification of the unit at this facility is not disclosed in the open literature.
China's sole large phased array radars (LPAR) near Xuanhua is believed to be manned by Second Artillery forces.
Photographic Evaluation Report
High resolution imagery is available from two sources, including declassified CORONA imagery, which would provide negation. As of 03 June 2000 Russian 2-meter resolution KVR-1000 imagery coverage was not available via the SPIN-2 service on TerraServer. As of 03 June 2000 archival Space Imaging IKONOS 1-meter imagery available on the CARTERRA™ Archive included a strip of 3 scenes, acquired on 28 February 2000. One scene includes an airfield with some structures that may be associated with the DF-5 deployment area.
