Shanghai Jiangwan Airfield
31°20'N 121°30'E

The Jiangwan airport in New Jiangwan city is located north of the city of Shanghai. This large airfield is the largest of the four airfields in the immediate Shanghai vicinity. Future plans call for Jiangwan Airfield to be developed at a large scale. Although Shanghai is one of the three biggest international aviation hubs in China, Shanghai has only one civil airport, the Shanghai Hongqiao Intentional Airport. An influx of 300,000 inhabitants is expected at the being-built Jiangwan Airport Residential Area.

Shanghai Aviation Industrial (Group) Co., Ltd. (SAIC) is the core of Shanghai Aviation Industrial Group of China. SAIC is a state owned company of limited liability invested and established by China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC?). Among the subordinate enterprises of SAIC there are Shanghai Aircraft Manufacture Factory, Shanghai Aircraft Research Institute, Shanghai Aeroengine Manufacture Factory and Shanghai International Aero-Technology Trade Company.

In 1992, McDonnell Douglas and China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) agreed to co-produce 20 MD-82 and 20 MD-90 commercial aircraft in the PRC. Known as the Trunkliner Program, the aircraft were to serve the PRC’s domestic "trunk" routes. Shanghai Aviation Industrial Corporation (SAIC) is the facility responsible for final assembly of Trunkliner aircraft. Since early 1996, the McDonnell Douglas machine tools have been stored at Shanghai Aviation Industrial Corporation.

Photographic Evaluation Report

High resolution imagery is available from three sources, including declassified CORONA imagery. Commercially available Russian 2-meter resolution KVR-1000 imagery is available via the SPIN-2 service on TerraServer. As of 08 April 2000 archival Space Imaging IKONOS 1-meter imagery available on the CARTERRA™ Archive includes over two dozen scenes, acquired between 17 January 2000 and 28 March 2000. Of these scenes, however, at least half feature heavy cloud cover in excess of the standard 20% threshold. None of the remaining scenes include coverage of Shanghai Jiangwan Airfield.
