Hong Kong has embarked on a massive transport expansion scheme to create an advanced superstructure for trade and business, including the construction of the new Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island, located at Chek Lap Kok. When the new facility opened in July 1998, it was able to handle over 35 million passengers and three million tons of air cargo a year.
Airport services for Hong Kong International Airport at Kai Tak were terminated since 6 July 1998, when the replacement airport at Chek Lap Kok commenced its operation. The Kai Tak will be bulldozed and redeveloped.
