COMMERCE SAYS COMMERCIAL SATELLITES NOT COVERED BY MTCR SANCTIONS (Text: Department of Commerce press release of January 6) (130) The Office of the Secretary of Commerce released January 6 the following statement regarding commercial satellites:

(begin text) The Administration announced today that commercial satellites within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Commerce are not covered by the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) sanctions, and export licenses for those satellites may be approved.

The Commerce Department controls and licenses exports and reexports of dual-use commodities and technical data. Under the authority of the Export Administration Act, controls on these commodities and technologies are maintained for reasons of national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation and short supply.
